Field Notes from the Tuscan Countryside

Some mornings at the farm begin before anyone else is awake.

In the early hours, the Tuscan countryside moves slowly. The light begins to touch the olive trees, the air is still cool, and the valley is quiet in a way that feels almost deliberate. At Maraviglia, our small farm stay in the Val di Chiana countryside near Monte San Savino, these quiet mornings often happen just before a new retreat begins.

The house is still empty, but the atmosphere of the retreat is already starting to take shape.

Before the Guests Arrive

The day before a retreat is always a special moment on the farm.

Beds are prepared, the long wooden dining table is set, and the kitchen begins to fill with ingredients for the meals we will share during the week. Olive oil bottles from the latest harvest are lined up, ready to appear on the table with dinner.

Outside, the yoga deck overlooks the olive groves and the surrounding countryside. Sometimes the wooden floor is still slightly damp from the night air, and the silence of the landscape feels almost like part of the preparation.

Even before the first guest arrives, the farm is quietly getting ready.

Life at a Farm Stay Retreat in Tuscany

Hosting a retreat at a countryside farm in Tuscany feels very different from renting a villa for a holiday.

A farm stay has its own rhythm, shaped by the land and the seasons. Meals follow what is available locally, vegetables arrive from nearby farms, and the olive oil comes from the trees that surround the house.

For many guests, this connection with the landscape is something they notice immediately. The silence is deeper than they expect, and the slower pace of the countryside allows them to step out of their usual routines.

Over the first days of the retreat, people begin to settle into this rhythm almost naturally.

When the Landscape Becomes Part of the Retreat

Many retreat leaders who host their programs at Maraviglia tell us something similar after the first day or two.

They feel that the landscape itself begins to support the retreat.

Morning yoga sessions take place with the view of the olive groves, long walks through the countryside become part of the daily rhythm, and shared meals outdoors create moments of connection between guests.

In Tuscany, nature is not just a backdrop for the experience. The landscape becomes part of it.

A Different Kind of Luxury

Luxury in the Tuscan countryside is often quieter than people imagine.

It is not about perfection or spectacle, but about space and simplicity. It is the luxury of waking up in silence, practicing yoga surrounded by nature, and sharing long dinners outdoors as the evening light slowly fades.

At Maraviglia, this slower rhythm is what many guests remember most when they leave.

Life at Maraviglia

Maraviglia is a small retreat venue and olive farm located in the Val di Chiana countryside of Tuscany. Throughout the year we host small retreats, private groups, and gatherings connected to food, nature, and conscious living.

And sometimes, before a retreat begins, the farm returns to a moment of quiet — a pause before the house fills again with voices, yoga mats, shared meals, and the simple rhythm of life in the countryside.

This quiet moment before the retreat begins is part of what makes life at Maraviglia so special: the sense that the landscape, the house, and the rhythm of the countryside are already quietly preparing to welcome others in.
